Joel T. Katz, M.D.


Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program
Brigham & Women’s Hospital

Joel T. Katz, M.D., M.A.C.P. is a primary care physician, infectious diseases specialist, Director of the internal medicine residency program, and Vice Chair for Education at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he is the Marshall A. Wolf Chair in Medical Education.  He is associate professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School. 

In addition to his clinical practice and administrative roles, a former biomedical illustrator, Dr. Katz has championed the use of visual arts and humanities to improve patient care and medical education. He is the director of the HMS course “Training the Eye: Improving the Art of Physical Diagnosis,” in which students hone their physical diagnosis acumen through the study of fine arts at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He serves on the Faculty Executive Committee of the Arts and Humanities Initiative at HMS. To support the personal wellbeing and musical enlightenment of his trainees, Dr. Katz has donated Longwood Symphony Orchestra tickets to every concert for two decades.
