The Healing Art of Music™ program, which began in 1991, has raised more than $2,800,000 for over fifty worthy causes and has been nationally recognized with the League of American Orchestras' MetLife Award for Excellence in Community Engagement and the highest cultural recognition in Massachusetts, the Commonwealth Award. LSO is proud to have supported the following organizations over the program's history, including those featured on our 2023-24 season.

October 28, 2023: project step
Since 1982, Project STEP (String Training Education Program) has provided talented young musicians that identify with historically underrepresented groups in classical music with comprehensive music instruction. Project STEP envisions a world in which the classical music profession reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of our communities. 100% of Project STEP graduates have gone on to college or conservatory.
DECEMBER 2, 2023: Shelter Music Boston
Shelter Music Boston delivers monthly chamber music concerts to
Greater Boston homeless shelters and substance misuse recovery centers, providing classical music as a social service.
Every note invests in the capacity of classical music to create social change
in environments of great need.
Shelter Music Boston believes all people deserve access to the dignity, creativity, and passion of classical music.
MARCH 9, 2024: The Augustus A. White III Institute for Healthcare Equity
The basis of The Augustus A. White III Institute is to support, educate, and advocate for those affected by healthcare disparities, ultimately working towards a reformed medical system. The Augustus A. White III Institute is based and inspired by the life and experiences of world-renowned orthopedic surgeon and medical educator Dr. Augustus A. White III. The Institute is dedicated to his mission to provide quality healthcare services to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, marital status and/or sexual orientation.
MAY 11, 2024: YWCA Cambridge
YWCA Cambridge is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
YWCA Cambridge is a cornerstone for providing safe, affordable accommodations for women and families and an advocate for human rights. With 103 units of single room occupancy (SRO) housing for single women and a 10-room shelter for homeless families, the YWCA is the city’s largest residential housing provider for women.
