May 14, 2011 Lawrence Isaacson, guest conductor New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall 8:00pm
Guest
Conductor Lawrence Isaacson joins Longwood Symphony Orchestra to present
22 year-old pianist Charlie Albright in his Boston debut. Winner of the 2010 Young
Concert Artists International Auditions, Albright performs Piano Concerto
No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich composed this work to celebrate
his son Maxim's 19th birthday, who premiered the concerto at the Moscow
Conservatory. Austrian composer Franz Schreker had his first
great compositional success at the age of 23 with Intermezzo, which won
an important composition competition at the Vienna Conservatory. Edward Elgar's beloved Enigma Variations, composed as odes to dear friends, and Malcolm
Arnold's Tam O'Shanter complete the evening of Youth and Friendship.
