Susan Davenny Wyner, guest conductor Ran Dank, piano
Dance styles in the early 20th century ranged from the Russian-folk-dance-influenced ballet of Stravinsky’s The Firebird to the foxtrot and the Charleston of Gatsby’s roaring 1920s. Guest conductor Susan Davenny Wyner juxtaposes these dances with two powerful works: Verdi’s Overture to La forza del destino (The Force of Destiny) and Beethoven’s final piano concerto, the “Emperor,” which features pianist Ran Dank, lauded by The New York Times for his “technique, imagination, and powerhouse pianism.”
