The Longwood Symphony Orchestra proudly received the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' highest cultural honor, the Commonwealth Award, at a star-studded gathering at the Massachusetts State House recently. Governor Deval Patrick presided as the LSO was recognized with the Culture & Healing Award for its decades-long history of "outstanding service at the intersection of health care and the arts, humanities, and sciences."
In addition to presenting regular concerts in New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, which have raised nearly $1,000,000 for the needy in the local community, the orchestra's LSO on Call program presents free chamber music in hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, and throughout the Greater Boston region, and its Community Conversations are nationally-recognized scientific symposia on music and medicine. The orchestra is proud to join an illustrious roster of individuals and institutions who have made Massachusetts a national beacon for the arts, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, author David McCullough, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the nationally recognized youth performance program, Express Yourself.
