Healing comes naturally to the Longwood Symphony Orchestra. Made up of musicians from New England's finest medical, scientific and academic institutions, the orchestra's dedication to healing resonates from emergency room to rehearsal space, cancer laboratory to concert hall.
Our programs underscore Longwood Symphony Orchestra's unique position of healing, situated at the intersection of the Arts and Sciences.
- Healing Art of Music™ program, LSO's flagship program raises awareness and funds for the community's most promising medical nonprofit organizations.
- LSO on Call, takes our musicians to hospices, hospitals and rehabilitation centers where they put down their medical instruments and pick up their musical instruments to play music for those who can no longer attend concerts.
- Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan McPhee, celebrates his 5th season with Longwood Symphony Orchestra this year. Under his brilliant leadership, LSO has performed the World Premiere of Gene Scheer's Albert Schweitzer Portrait and the New England Premiere of Giya Kancheli's STYX. In Spring 2010, he will introduce Boston audiences to exciting young international talents, Tai Murray and Philip Edward Fisher and lead LSO in its debut at Seji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood.
Community engagement is extremely important to Longwood Symphony Orchestra. Through its Healing Art of Music™ program, LSO's Community Partners receive subsidized tickets, pro-bono publicity, guidance in non-profit fundraising. Our 2009-2010 Community Partners are the American Epilepsy Society, The Food Project, ATASK - Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, and Berkshire Children and Families.
"MUSIC speaks without, beyond words... an absent verbal or non verbal response does not tell us what has gone in and where it has gone... souls hear music..." -Dr. William Kates, LSO oboist
